About this work

The third Divertissement, Op. 1, is an Allegretto in D major and 6/8. Sor asks for the sixth string to be lowered to D, reinforcing open bass notes and altering familiar left-hand landmarks. Above that foundation, broken chords, runs and melody share two broad pulses per bar.

The two-page piece contains repeated sections, frequent shifts and changing textures. Some passages move the bass beneath continuous figuration; others gather the voices into chords. Natural harmonics close the work, and their colour depends on an exact contact point and the timely release of the left-hand finger.

Tune the sixth string to D and locate every use of that bass. Practise arpeggios by pulse, then add the melody without speeding up. For harmonics, touch lightly above the indicated fret and lift as the string is plucked. Finally ensure that every repeat keeps the same 6/8 swing despite the shifts.
