About this work

The fourth Divertissement, Op. 1, is a remarkably concise Andante in 3/4: sixteen bars divided into two repeated sections. The melody sometimes crowns a chord and sometimes moves more freely while the bass provides structural supports. Such economy requires every note to be ranked; nothing can hide inside a stream of arpeggios.

Appoggiaturas, trills and chromatic notes animate the cadences. They are not added decoration: each prepares a resolution or renews the phrase. Repeated chords should remain supple, and sustained bass notes should last as long as the notation and the next shift allow.

Play the outer voices first and count three equal beats. Restore inner chords quietly, then place ornaments precisely within the pulse. Resume at the same speed after rests in each repeat. The piece is short enough to compare two balances without altering its structure.
