Divertissements Op. 2 n°1

About this work

The first Divertissement, Op. 2, is a Minuetto in G major and 3/4. Its melody forms at the top of chords and alternating bass notes, with shifts changing the density. Dance character depends on a present first beat and two lighter beats; three equal stresses would make the phrase rigid.

Repeated sections combine vertical chords, short stepwise lines and held values. Selected bass notes must continue while upper voices move. This discreet polyphony means choosing fingering according to the duration of each voice, not merely the easiest shape to grasp.

Reduce the score to bass and melody first. Restore the chords while keeping their top note in the foreground. Practise each shift from the preceding note to the following one, then replace it inside the complete phrase. Count through repeats without interruption and avoid slowing at every intermediate cadence.
