Divertissements Op. 2 n°2

About this work

A small triplet ornament launched before the bass gives this G-major Waltz in 3/8, the second piece of Op. 2, its signature. The impulse returns repeatedly and defines the dance before settling onto a chord. It must fit inside the pulse: delaying every occurrence would eventually dissolve the rhythm.

Repeats move the melody through several registers and alternate single lines, chords and more active basses. Inner voices complete the harmony without taking over. The right hand must therefore change its distribution quickly while preserving one colour between the decorated motif and its reply.

Play the motif without its triplet, then restore the three notes inside their allotted time. Practise bass notes with melodic peaks before completing the chords. During shifts, prepare the arrival finger from the last slurred note. Join all repeats with a clear but never heavy first beat.
