Divertissements Op. 2 n°4

The fourth Divertissement, Op. 2, is an Andante Minuet in 3/4. The writing first appears vertical, with melody placed above chords, but held bass notes and short inner lines create several layers. The first beat supports the dance while the other two carry motion towards the next bar.

Two repeated sections move away from C major through numerous accidentals and chromatic progressions. These colours should not become a sequence of isolated chords. Common notes, sustained basses and stepwise motion connect the harmonies. Effective fingering preserves those links while preparing the next position.

Play bass notes alone until their route is audible, then add the top note of each chord. Restore inner voices without increasing volume. Practise chromatic bars in pairs and identify fingers that can remain in place. Keep the same tempo in repeats and vary the presence of the melody instead.
