About this work

The fifth piece of Op. 2 is a Waltz marked Moderato in 3/8. Its first section pairs a lively semiquaver motif with spaced bass notes; the second, marked dolce, extends the melody above a more regular accompaniment. Touch and note length create the contrast without breaking the pulse.

Each part has its own repeats and gradually moves the left hand. Short, quick figures need to lead towards an arrival note, while chords act as punctuation. In the dolce section, alternating basses must not fragment the upper line. Both characters share the same waltz rhythm.

Practise semiquavers by aiming at their final note rather than stressing the first. Add short bass notes, then seek a rounder attack in the dolce. Prepare shifts from a guide finger. Connect the sections without speeding up when the opening motif returns.
