Divertissements Op. 2 n°6 : Siciliana

About this work

The sixth piece of Op. 2 is a Siciliana in E minor and 6/8. Its rocking rhythm supports a decorated melody above bass notes and chords that frequently change shape. The bar needs two broad pulses: six equal stresses would make the dance slow and heavy.

A substantial Maggiore episode moves into E major after the minor opening. Repeated chords establish a brighter colour while the upper line retains its appoggiaturas and replies. The return to minor does not require another tempo; mode, register and reduced dynamics create the change.

Practise the melody alone and identify ornaments leading to a resolution. Add bass notes, then inner chords at a lower volume. In the Maggiore, prepare complete chord shapes before each first beat. Connect major and minor with two constant pulses and genuine breaths at phrase endings.
