Sous le tonnerre et l'éclair Op. 324
About this work
Under Thunder and Lightning, Op. 324, is a fast polka by Johann Strauss II. In the orchestral version, bass-drum blows and cymbal crashes are part of the game: the storm is spectacular, but always held together by a dancing pulse. The piano reduction must suggest these colours without turning every accent into a hard chord.
Begin with the bass and the main beats. They should rebound, not weigh down the bar. Add the melody with short, mobile articulation; repeated notes benefit from a supple wrist and fingers close to the keys. In denser episodes, identify what represents melody, percussion and accompaniment, then assign each layer its own dynamic level.
Speed comes after precise changes of section. Practise the two bars before and after each repeat to avoid the small hesitation that often betrays a new passage. Prepare major accents through release rather than a high lift. The MIDI provides the general outline, but the storm effect depends on the contrast between dancing lightness and brief impacts.
