The third tableau establishes an Andante con moto pastorale. The winds present simple lines above a regular accompaniment, and the strings continue the atmosphere with a more open sonority than in the preceding movements. Yet the landscape is never completely detached from Manfred’s drama.

A middle section gradually expands the orchestra, increases harmonic tension and brings back darker gestures. The pastoral stability reveals the force of these central orchestral disturbances. When the opening material reappears, its transparency sounds more precarious, as though viewed through the memory of conflict.

Performance must preserve the inner motion of the accompaniments while giving the solos room to breathe. The layers benefit from separate rehearsal before being combined without thickening the doublings. The bass remains an essential guide through crescendos; at the return, reducing weight rather than pulse restores the opening simplicity.
