About this work

The final Allegro con fuoco begins in almost immediate agitation. The strings launch urgent figures, the brass cuts through the texture and percussion reinforces an infernal scene of abrupt changes. This first part of the document carries the movement into its broad central episodes but does not contain the conclusion.

Tchaikovsky sets broader passages, sometimes close to an orchestral chorale, against the turmoil before bringing the rapid rhythms back in denser form. Recalls of Manfred’s motive connect the finale to the first tableau. They prevent the sequence of scenes from becoming merely decorative and keep the personal drama at the centre of the design.

This score needs to be studied with the second part, supplied separately as No. 04.2. Restart points, tempo changes and dynamics should be prepared as one continuous span. Clear offbeats and attacks in the Allegro preserve a reserve for the still more massive episodes that follow in the other PDF.
