The Andante lugubre introduction proceeds through dark blocks and widely spaced calls, as though the finale must first gather its energy. The move into Allegro moderato does not remove that gravity; it converts it into motion. Short ideas answer one another, return in altered forms and prepare increasingly broad orchestral statements.

The score reveals a design built on contrasts of mass. Passages in which the orchestra withdraws make the returns of brass and percussion far more powerful. Tchaikovsky is not simply pursuing greater volume: he alternates tension, release and renewed impetus, giving the movement a long breath despite the variety of its material.
