About this work
After a Moderato assai opening that firmly establishes the frame, the Allegro vivo launches a finale based on repetition and expansion. The principal theme lends itself to statements of ever greater breadth: first presented plainly, it returns enriched by counterpoint, new colours and increasing orchestral weight.
The movement’s length does not depend on arbitrary accumulation. The score reveals carefully organised stages, separated by reductions of texture that renew the impetus before each return. Woodwinds, strings, brass and percussion do not simply double the same idea; each contributes to enlarging its reach and changing its perspective.
To avoid monotony, every restatement needs its own rank and sufficient reserves must be kept for the coda. The more transparent episodes deserve genuine relaxation without losing the underlying pulse. The finale can then unfold its power logically, its ultimate brilliance emerging as the result of a patient transformation of the opening material.
