About this work

The opening brass fanfare establishes a motive that will structure the entire movement. Its dotted rhythm and compact sonority interrupt, renew and frame the episodes of the Andante sostenuto and then the Moderato con anima. Against this call, the more mobile lines continually seek room to develop.

The score reveals a form held in tension by returns of the motive rather than a simple opposition of themes. Restless waltz gestures, string progressions and woodwind replies acquire a different meaning whenever the brass reappears. Tchaikovsky also controls density carefully: broad tuttis are prepared by more transparent textures that make their impact perceptible.

Performance requires a long-range view. If the fanfare reaches its maximum at every return, the structure loses its degrees; kept connected to the pulse, it can gain authority through to the end. The many changes of character need to belong to a single trajectory, guided by the inner motion of the phrases.
