Symphonie n°4 en Fa mineur Op. 36 - 04 - Finale

About this work

The finale opens with a discharge from the full orchestra that immediately establishes its level of energy. In this Allegro con fuoco, Tchaikovsky sets a brilliant rush against a folk theme with squarer proportions. Their alternation drives the movement: every return changes colour, thickness or function instead of merely repeating the previous episode.

The score shows how percussion and brass amplify the climaxes without carrying the tension alone. String figures, woodwind replies and harmonic progressions sustain the impetus between the major bursts. The recall of the fanfare heard at the beginning of the symphony suddenly changes the perspective and places the finale within the arc of the whole work.

To preserve power through to the end, the ensemble must retain dynamic degrees and keep the pulse legible in the thickest textures. The folk theme benefits from directness without rigidity. After the cyclic motive returns, renewed motion should sound freshly won, giving the coda its true force.
