About this work
The finale of the Fifth Symphony brings back the cyclic motive from the opening movement in its Andante maestoso. First heard as something dark and restrained, the idea now sounds solemn, almost processional. The Allegro vivace then sets it against more impetuous motion driven by the strings, brass calls and sudden changes of density.
The long course is not a single continuous crescendo. Tchaikovsky alternates returns of the motive, fast episodes, retreats and renewed launches until the closing Presto. A late interruption can sound like an ending already reached; what follows expands the space once more and turns the return in E major into a genuine apotheosis.
In study, each appearance of the motive needs its own place in the hierarchy, with enough sound held in reserve for the final pages. String passagework must remain articulate beneath the fanfares, while transitions require a shared pulse despite their changes of character. The concluding power then grows from the whole design rather than from a fortissimo introduced too soon.
