Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35 — I. Allegro moderato
About this work
In the Allegro moderato of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto Op. 35, the soloist does more than stand above the orchestra. The violin takes up material first established by the ensemble, stretches it into long lines, then reshapes it through double stops, passagework and changes of register. Intimacy, dance and brilliance therefore belong to one continuous argument.
The full score becomes easier to read when each passage is assigned a function: who carries the theme, who supports the harmony, and who prepares the next transition. Winds often comment on the violin line, while strings may supply either pulse or breadth. Before the cadenza, identify the successive increases of tension instead of waiting only for the largest climax.
In rehearsal with a soloist, agree on long breaths and on the return of tempo after flexible passages. The orchestra should retain detail without covering the violin. The soloist, in turn, can separate genuinely projected statements from phrases that continue a conversation. This hierarchy prevents the whole movement from being played at one unchanging level of intensity.
