Read the silences as dramatic gestures. They allow one musical character to leave before the next enters and give relief to changes of register, particularly when the basses suddenly shift the centre of gravity.
In rehearsal, establish entries after silences and changes of tempo. A shared attack preserves flexibility between episodes; contrasts will sound sharper without any need to rush.
