About this work
Tom Turpin published St. Louis Rag in 1903. The piece retains ragtime’s alternating bass and chords, yet each section changes the way the right hand anticipates, delays or displaces the accent.
Short motifs return in different registers and continue through more connected replies. The contrast between left-hand stability and syncopated freedom gives the work its impetus without requiring a rushed tempo.
Keep the bass regular and play chords with a brief gesture. Speak the right-hand rhythms before combining them, then shape repeats so that every new section brings a distinct colour.
