Requiem 2. Sequence

About this work

The Sequence sets episodes of very different scale beside one another, from the thunderous returns of the Dies irae to the more exposed lines of the soloists. The recurring motif acts as a hinge rather than as a merely spectacular effect.

Locate the theme’s returns, the silences that precede them and the new pulse that follows. Choir, soloists and orchestra need to share these thresholds so that changes of tempo remain clear.

Rehearse collective attacks separately from the more restrained transitions. Dynamics will gain force when every crescendo has a phrase direction and tuning remains controlled at extreme levels.
