The Agnus Dei from Verdi’s Requiem begins with striking bareness: soprano and mezzo-soprano present the line in unison, without seeking operatic effect. The choir takes it up, and the orchestra gradually broadens the space. The same words return, but their weight changes when carried by two solo voices, the massed choir or the instrumental colours.
The two soloists must match their vowels, consonants and, above all, the way they enter each note. An approximate unison is more conspicuous than a large chord. The choir can prepare its responses at a reduced dynamic, watching the intervals and the length of Latin endings. The strings support the breath without turning every slur into a crescendo.
The challenge is to shape several repetitions from apparently limited material. Note what changes at each return: forces, register, dynamics, harmony or density. The calm remains active to the end. If it becomes uniform, the movement loses the insistent prayer that keeps it upright.
