Vivaldi’s Concerto RV 540 brings together viola d’amore, lute, two violins, viola, cello and continuo. In both Allegros the soloists answer one another through runs, broken chords and returns of the ensemble material while retaining the distinct colour of their strings.

The central Largo narrows the sound space and highlights a dialogue between sustained lines and discreet accompaniment. The returning Allegro restores rapid exchanges as the strings frame the two solo parts and reinforce cadences.

Rehearse lute and viola d’amore with the bass first to align entries. Strings should lighten their attack beneath solo episodes; in the Largo, allow resonances to meet without covering details of articulation.
