8 petits préludes et fugues - BWV 553-560

About this work

The eight Prelude and Fugue pairs offer short forms in which the opening gesture and contrapuntal subject remain easy to locate. Each Prelude establishes a key and manner of moving forward; each Fugue then concentrates on an idea distributed among voices and directed towards clear cadences.

Their traditional place under a BWV number does not settle authorship. The preserved edition itself states that attribution to Johann Tobias Krebs is possible. These should therefore be described as pieces transmitted within Bach’s circle rather than allowing a catalogue habit to become musicological certainty.

To study them, mark the subject, entries and episodes in each Fugue, then check coordination with the pedals at a slow tempo. Vary registration and articulation slightly according to the character of each pair without multiplying effects. Their brevity primarily offers practice in complete form and precise polyphonic listening.
