About this work
Ach Gott, vom Himmel sieh darein takes a Luther chorale and gives its opening movement the density of an older motet. The chorale tune proceeds in long notes in the soprano, supported by cornett, while the three lower voices develop imitative lines doubled by trombones. The contrast between a steady cantus firmus and mobile counterpoint shapes the whole listening experience.
The recitatives and two arias then move the commentary towards individual voices. The alto converses with a solo violin, while the tenor gains a different colour from oboes and strings. The final chorale reunites the forces in more direct writing without dispelling the gravity established at the opening.
In rehearsal, sing the chorale melody alone first, then locate each of its soprano entries. The lower voices should articulate their imitation without thickening consonants, and doubling instruments should support rather than cover them. In the arias, establish breathing with the obbligato partners before settling on a shared tempo.
