Christ lag in Todes Banden builds its entire course upon one Easter chorale. A short sinfonia already establishes its outline, after which every stanza transforms the melody through new forces and a new disposition of voices. Unity therefore comes not from repetition but from continuous variation around an immediately recognisable cantus firmus.
From the opening duet to the choral movements, Bach alternates imitation, joined lines and fugal entries. The bass descends into darker regions in its verse, while elsewhere the soprano carries the melody above a lighter fabric. The final harmonisation reunites the voices and gives a plain ending to this arch-like design.
Mark the chorale melody in every verse before rehearsing secondary lines. Singers need to know when they carry the main text and when their line becomes commentary. Retain a related pulse from one movement to another, but adapt articulation to each texture: more sustained in duets and more clearly profiled in imitative passages.
