Cantate BWV 006 - Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden

About this work

Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden opens with a collective plea in which homophonic calls alternate with more mobile, fugal writing. Strings and winds darken the light without making the discourse static. The movement conveys both the urgency of the words and the restraint of a prayer at the approach of evening.

The alto aria gives the oboe da caccia a warm, enveloping line. Later, the soprano presents an ornamented chorale while a cello animates the accompaniment; this movement was reused in the Schübler Chorales. A firmer bass aria prepares the return to shared writing in the final chorale.

In the opening chorus, distinguish chords that carry the text directly from episodes in which each voice follows its own course. The alto should breathe with the oboe da caccia without weighting its long phrases. For the soprano chorale, rehearse the plain melody first, then add ornamentation and the moving bass.
