About this work
Meine Seel erhebt den Herren is founded on the German version of the Magnificat. The opening chorus places the chorale melody in the soprano, surrounded by orchestral and vocal writing that gives it momentum. Bach thus treats a familiar liturgical text as a proclamation in motion rather than a static harmonisation.
The soprano aria lightens the texture, after which the bass aria states the text more firmly. The alto-tenor duet sets both voices against the chorale melody played by trumpet and oboes. The final doxology recalls the opening material and closes the cantata through structural as well as verbal return.
Make the chorale audible before approaching the first chorus and the duet, so performers know which line governs the texture. Preserve diction through the coloratura of the arias. For the duet, coordinate the soloists’ breathing precisely and balance the instruments that carry the melody above them.
