Cantate BWV 011 - Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen (Ascension Oratorio)
About this work
The Ascension Oratorio opens with a festive chorus in which trumpets, timpani, flutes, oboes and strings unfold a broad architecture. Choral episodes grow from orchestral ritornellos rather than a pre-existing chorale. This scale immediately places the work between liturgical cantata and dramatic narrative.
The Evangelist’s recitatives carry the story, while other voices take part in the action or comment upon it. An alto aria suspends the motion in a more inward colour; the soprano aria, accompanied by flutes and strings, opens another contemplative space. Two chorales frame these moments and connect the narrative to the community.
Prepare a map of changing forces before the first rehearsal. Recitatives should move forward with clear diction without acquiring the weight of the large choruses. In festive movements, first coordinate articulation between choir, trumpets and strings; in the arias, allow the obbligato instruments to determine the span of each breath.
