About this work
Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen begins with a sinfonia in which the oboe unfolds a lament above the strings. The following chorus transforms a descending ground bass into a broad vocal construction; Bach later reused this music for the Crucifixus of the B minor Mass. Dissonances and sighing motifs give the text gravity without stopping the pulse.
The alto aria continues the oboe’s colour in a more personal meditation. The bass then introduces firmer speech, after which the tenor proceeds with an instrumental line where a trumpet states a chorale. The final chorale gathers these perspectives in a short harmonisation illuminated by an independent upper part.
In the large chorus, rehearse the ground bass separately and have singers locate every return of its pattern. Harmonic tensions should resolve without added slowing. In the arias, establish shared articulation with the oboe and then the trumpet; retain a sense of direction in the final chorale despite its solemnity.
