Cantate BWV 013 - Meine Seufzer, meine Tränen

About this work

Meine Seufzer, meine Tränen dispenses with a large opening chorus and enters directly into individual lament. The tenor sings with two recorders and an oboe da caccia, a combination of colours that makes the line both fragile and dark. Silences, suspensions and appoggiaturas matter as much as melodic motion.

After the recitative, the alto introduces a stanza of chorale within a texture where the instruments continue their commentary. The bass aria changes the light through flutes and solo violin without breaking the inward atmosphere. A soprano recitative leads to the final chorale, whose restrained harmonisation concentrates the entire course.

Do not fill the silences of the opening aria; they structure the declamation. The tenor must coordinate consonants and breathing with all three obbligato instruments. In the alto movement, keep the chorale melody audible amid surrounding figures; the bass aria instead requires light circulation between voice, flutes and violin.
