About this work
Wer Dank opfert, der preiset mich is arranged in two parts around a broad chorus of praise. An orchestral ritornello prepares the vocal entries, after which the voices develop the text in imitative writing with a dancing foundation. The ensemble remains bright without trumpets, through the motion of oboes and strings.
The first part continues with a recitative and soprano aria in which the vocal line converses with the violins. After the liturgical division, the tenor receives a recitative and aria in a more continuous string texture. The final chorale gathers the whole course into a concise harmonic statement.
For the opening chorus, rehearse the ritornello as a shared source of articulation so vocal entries continue its momentum. In the arias, soloists benefit from learning the string motifs that prepare their entries. Mark the return after the division between both parts clearly without introducing an artificial change of character.
