Gleichwie der Regen und Schnee vom Himmel fällt belongs to Bach’s early cantatas and has an unusual instrumental colour. In its first conception, the sinfonia and accompaniment rely on four viola parts and continuo. This middle register, without violins, creates an immediately recognisable muted depth.

The bass recitative states the biblical text, after which another recitative is interrupted by choral calls in the manner of a litany. The soprano aria brings the violas together in unison around a deliberately simple line. A short chorale ends the cantata.
