About this work
Es erhub sich ein Streit begins in the midst of the archangel Michael’s battle. Without a preparatory ritornello, the choir enters lively contrapuntal writing propelled by three trumpets, timpani, oboes and strings. Fugal passages and more homophonic assertions make the scene intelligible despite its density.
The soprano aria changes scale and gives the oboes d’amore a more protective colour. After the recitative, the tenor converses with an obbligato trumpet whose radiant line is more than a fanfare. The final chorale reunites the ensemble, enriched by an independent instrumental part that prolongs the celebration.
In the opening chorus, establish consonants in the fugal entries before adding brass; they should crown the texture rather than cover its subjects. The soprano should breathe with both oboes d’amore. In the tenor aria, rehearse meeting points with the trumpet separately and keep the vocal line flexible beside its brilliance.
