Cantate BWV 020 - O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort

About this work

O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort unfolds a broad chorale fantasia in the manner of a French overture. Dotted rhythms give the beginning tense solemnity, after which a faster section releases contrapuntal entries around the cantus firmus. Trumpet, three oboes and strings broaden the palette without dissolving the rigour of the design.

The cantata is divided into two parts and contains an unusually extended sequence of recitatives, arias and chorales. A first chorale creates a clear division before the second part resumes the commentary through different vocal perspectives. The same chorale returns at the end, closing the architecture through symmetry rather than a new spectacular gesture.

In the opening, distinguish dotted rhythms clearly from the circulation of the fast section while retaining a common pulse. Map changes of soloist and obbligato instrument before rehearsing the arias. Both chorales benefit from shared phrasing so their framing function remains audible across the length of the work.
