Cantate BWV 021 - Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis

About this work

Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis is a large-scale cantata transmitted in several states connected with its revivals. A sinfonia led by oboe establishes lament before the choruses, recitatives and arias of the first part multiply forms of anxiety. Motifs pass from one voice to another like a thought that cannot be fixed.

The second part changes the dramaturgy: soprano embodies the Soul and bass the voice of Jesus. Their recitative and duet make consolation emerge through genuine dialogue, with lines that wait, answer and finally come into agreement. The last chorus adds three trumpets and timpani to broad, jubilant writing.

Given the length, organise rehearsals by families of material rather than only in page order. Rehearse choral fugues separately, then their transitions. In the dialogue, both soloists should know the other line and breathe together; in the finale, add trumpets only after stabilising vocal polyphony and strings.
