A bass recitative returns to individual speech before a soprano-alto duet with closely associated lines. The alto recitative finally prepares the concluding chorale. The work therefore does not simply grow in scale; it alternates choral breadth with solo proximity while looking both at the year just passed and the year to come.
The opening aria needs a calm pulse that does not become slow. In the chorus, make the fugue subject audible in every section before assembling the orchestra.
