Cantate BWV 030 - Freu dich, erlöste Schar

About this work

Freue dich, erlöste Schar adapts a secular cantata for the feast of Saint John the Baptist. Its opening chorus moves with dancing energy, carried by flutes, oboes and strings. The same movement returns at the end with new words; this reprise frames the work and turns initial jubilation into an assured conclusion.

Both parts alternate recitatives and arias assigned across all four solo ranges. The bass opens a broad, decisive space; the alto converses with flute, while soprano and tenor receive other instrumental combinations. The secular origin is not concealed: Bach preserves its vitality and places it within a new dramatic course.

Establish the chorus’s rhythmic character at once, since it must return intact in the finale. In every aria, identify the ritornello and motifs taken up or transformed by the voice. Recitatives should link the numbers without heaviness. In movements with flute, coordinate breathing before deciding ornaments.
