About this work
Geist und Seele wird verwirret is a cantata for solo alto, without choir or chorale. Each of its two parts begins with a sinfonia in which obbligato organ converses with oboes and strings. Instrumental virtuosity is not decorative prelude: it defines an entire work founded on the relationship between soloist and ensemble.
Recitatives frame three arias with sharply differentiated textures. At times the organ extends the voice through rapid lines; elsewhere the accompaniment gathers around a more measured rhythm. The absence of a choral conclusion preserves the alto’s individual perspective throughout, while the last aria closes the second part through its own gesture.
Organise rehearsals around the alto-organ partnership rather than separating voice and orchestra. In the sinfonias, clarify handovers between keyboard and strings; in the arias, place breathing at ritornello returns. Recitatives should retain direct diction and prepare each new character without added slowing.
