About this work
Schwingt freudig euch empor opens Advent with a chorus whose rising motion and triple metre retain dancing elegance. Bach adapts music conceived for another context, yet the flexibility of oboes and strings naturally suits the idea of ascent. The voices enter successively before joining in the refrains.
The first part combines a tenor recitative, an aria with oboe d’amore and a chorale. In the second, bass and then soprano move to the foreground; an obbligato violin gives the soprano aria particularly mobile contours. Another chorale ends the cantata and answers the earlier one like a second pillar.
The opening chorus should spring without rushing; first unify the upbeat and motif endings. The tenor must breathe with oboe d’amore, and the soprano with violin. Compare both chorales in rehearsal to give them a common foundation while respecting their different functions in the two parts.
