About this work
Jesu, nun sei gepreiset opens the year with a chorale fantasia of exceptional breadth. The soprano melody crosses a texture where three trumpets, timpani, oboes and strings alternate solemnity with motion. The chorus expands its last line through a change of metre, as though the conclusion refused to close too soon.
The soprano aria reduces the brilliance and sets the voice in dialogue with oboes. After the alto recitative, the tenor aria is distinguished by an agile, singing violoncello piccolo line. The bass recitative prepares the returning chorale, enriched by festive instruments and more developed voice leading than a simple final cadence.
In the opening, stabilise the cantus firmus before working on changes of metre. Trumpets should crown cadences without masking inner voices. The soprano must breathe with oboes, and the tenor follow the violoncello piccolo’s articulation. Retain the pulse in the final chorale despite the scale of the forces.
