About this work
Gott fähret auf mit Jauchzen opens the Ascension with a brilliant chorus in which three trumpets, timpani, oboes and strings support dense vocal writing. Rising figures and imitative entries give the text motion, while more chordal proclamations preserve the ensemble’s clarity.
The cantata unfolds in two particularly substantial parts. Tenor and soprano occupy the first with recitatives and arias; the second brings bass and then alto. The bass aria pairs the voice with obbligato trumpet, yet the brilliance remains integrated into the line. A final chorale returns all four sections to a shared conclusion.
Establish entries in the opening chorus without brass, then add trumpets and timpani as another level of colour. Each soloist should know the ritornello preparing the aria. In the bass movement, balance trumpet with textual consonants. The final chorale should remain firm without becoming a slow march.
