Cantate BWV 044 - Sie werden euch in den Bann tun

About this work

Sie werden euch in den Bann tun avoids a grand opening gesture. Tenor and bass begin alone in duet, supported by oboes and continuo; the choir then enters and broadens the prophecy in more urgent writing. This move from two witnesses to the community gives the beginning its dramatic tension.

The alto aria, accompanied by oboe, ends the first part before the chorale. In the second, a bass recitative and soprano aria shift the text towards a more personal response. The last chorale does not mechanically repeat the earlier one; it closes the course after this change of perspective.

Rehearse the duet without seeking large volume too early; imitation must remain intelligible. Prepare the choral entry separately so it continues the tempo. The alto should breathe with the oboe, and the soprano retain light articulation in the aria. Compare both chorales to preserve shared diction.
