About this work
Ich geh und suche mit Verlangen is a dialogue cantata for soprano and bass without an independent choir. The opening sinfonia places obbligato organ at the centre of concertante writing drawn from the same material as Concerto BWV 1053. The keyboard does more than prepare the voices; it establishes the motion carrying their entire exchange.
The bass, as the voice of Jesus, receives an aria with organ, then the soprano embodies the Soul in recitative. Their duet develops a relationship of pursuit and answer. In the last movement, an instrumental chorale melody is superimposed upon the dialogue, creating a symbolic third voice without introducing a separate choir.
First rehearse the organ-orchestra relationship in the sinfonia, then reuse its articulation in the arias. Both soloists must know one another’s motifs and breathe together in the duet. In the finale, keep the instrumental chorale perfectly clear but integrated with the vocal lines rather than placed above them.
