About this work
Schlage doch, gewünschte Stunde long circulated as BWV 53 but is no longer regarded as a work by Johann Sebastian Bach. It is now attributed to Melchior Hoffmann. That authorship should be stated clearly even though the former number remains useful for locating editions and recordings.
The source contains a single aria for alto, strings and continuo. Bells punctuate the texture while pizzicato strings establish a regular pulse. This immediately recognisable sonority supports long vocal phrases; no recitative, chorus or chorale completes the movement in the document.
The tempo should allow bells to resonate without turning the line into a funeral march. The alto should shape phrases above the pizzicato and prepare cadences with the bass. Retain both Melchior Hoffmann and former BWV 53 on working material to combine accurate attribution with documentary findability.
