About this work
Widerstehe doch der Sünde opens upon a dissonance sustained by the strings before resolution. The alto enters this unstable harmonic space and unfolds a line both firm and chromatic. The tension of the text is written into suspensions, clashes and voice leading rather than an external effect.
A central recitative leads to the livelier second aria, where voice and strings engage in fugal writing. The cantata contains neither choir nor chorale; all three movements remain centred on the alto and the changing accompaniment.
In the first aria, tune dissonances without softening them and make every resolution audible. The alto should sustain long phrases from the continuo bass. In the final fugue, rehearse the subject in each string part before adding the voice, retaining shared articulation and a legible tempo.
