Cantate BWV 059 - Wer mich liebet, der wird mein Wort halten

About this work

Wer mich liebet, der wird mein Wort halten opens Pentecost with a soprano-bass duet accompanied by festive forces. Trumpets, timpani, oboes and strings give breadth to both voices without introducing an independent choir. Motifs pass from instruments to soloists within a concertante texture.

A soprano recitative leads to the central chorale, the only four-part movement. The bass aria then reduces the forces and foregrounds an obbligato violin. The final duet restores soprano and bass, closing the cantata in a more direct relationship than the brilliant opening movement.

In the first duet, stabilise both vocal entries before adding trumpets and timpani. The chorale should form a genuine division without excessive slowing. Bass and violin should rehearse ritornello returns together. In the last duet, prioritise equal consonants and shared cadences rather than concluding volume.
