About this work
O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort stages Fear, sung by alto, and Hope, sung by tenor. In the opening, the alto carries the chorale while the tenor opposes it with a freer line. Trumpet, oboe d’amore and strings make both the immobility of anxiety and the motion of reply audible at once.
The following duet tightens their confrontation, then a recitative leads to another chorale. The bass subsequently enters as the voice of Christ in an arioso that changes the relationship between the characters. The final chorale closes the cantata by giving the dialogue a collective outcome rather than a purely individual victory.
Give both soloists distinct characters from the first rehearsal without sacrificing rhythmic ensemble. The alto chorale must remain steady beneath the tenor line. In the arioso, the bass can bring a new colour without broadening the tempo. Chorales benefit from common diction despite their different contexts.
