Cantate BWV 062 - Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland

About this work

Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland uses the same chorale as BWV 61 but now places it within a complete chorale cantata. The soprano cantus firmus dominates a fabric of imitation where oboes, strings and lower voices develop independent motifs. The melody remains steady within a continually renewed texture.

The tenor aria takes a flowing line above the accompaniment, then the bass recitative prepares a more assertive aria. Soprano and alto subsequently share a recitative where the voices sometimes meet. The final chorale restores the melody in common harmonisation.

Compare the opening cantus firmus with the last chorale before rehearsing free voices. In the tenor aria, group coloratura by phrase. The bass should articulate with ritornellos without weighting them. In the two-voice recitative, prepare shared entries and passages of genuine dialogue.
