Cantate BWV 074 - Wer mich liebet, der wird mein Wort halten
About this work
For Pentecost, BWV 74 enlarges the Wer mich liebet, der wird mein Wort halten duet from Cantata BWV 59 for choir. Three trumpets, timpani, oboes, oboe da caccia, strings and four voices give the opening a festive character. Its material remains flexible despite the new scale.
Four arias then distribute the words among soprano, bass, tenor and alto. The soprano dialogues with oboe da caccia; the bass first sings with continuo, while the alto later joins oboes, solo violin and strings in the fullest aria. Two recitatives and a chorale frame this sequence.
In the chorus, retain the mobility inherited from the original duet and add trumpets only once articulation is stable. Each aria requires a different balance: listen to the obbligato instrument rather than standardising accompaniment. The final chorale must recover clear collective diction after four solo portraits.
