Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes continued Bach’s assumption of office in Leipzig one week after BWV 75. Trumpet, oboes, strings and choir carry a broad first movement. Recitatives and arias for soprano and then bass lead to a first stanza of Es woll uns Gott genädig sein.
Part two opens with a sinfonia for oboe d’amore, viola da gamba and continuo, identical to the first movement of Organ Sonata BWV 528. Further recitatives, a tenor aria and an alto aria with those two instruments lead to another stanza of the same chorale, closing fourteen movements.
Build part one towards its chorale without exhausting choral volume too early. In the sinfonia and alto aria, oboe d’amore and viola da gamba must remain equal lines. Compare both final harmonisations and retain related diction despite their different contexts.
