About this work
Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild opens the Reformation festival with two horns, timpani, oboes, strings and choir. The first movement combines fanfares, long vocal notes and fugal passages. A later revival added two flutes, but the texture remains founded upon horns and oboes.
The alto aria with solo oboe leads to Nun danket alle Gott, where horns and timpani reinforce cadences. A bass recitative and soprano-bass duet with violins occupy the centre of the second half. Another chorale ends the work with the same large forces.
In the opening, keep the choir ahead of the fanfares and rehearse fugal sections separately. The alto must breathe with the oboe, while both duet voices integrate with the violin lines. Compare the chorales: the first is an internal summit and the second a closure.
